IMMERSE YOURSELF IN AUSTRALIA
This subject is about getting out into the Australian environment and experiencing what we do for leisure and only students who are in the International Program will be in the class. You will participate in two camps using backpacks, sleeping bags and open fires. As a camper you will choose, carry and cook your own food. The camps could be located anywhere from the Fleurieu Peninsula to the Murray River to the Flinders Ranges to Yorke Peninsula. You will see Aussie native wildlife, stunning scenery and learn new survival skills. This course also includes an opportunity to try bouldering, bush walking and orienteering along with surfing, canoeing and snorkelling when the weather is warm. What a great opportunity for you to grow as a person!
LEARN ABOUT AUSTRALIA
Australian Studies is a subject for International students to quickly experience the history, geography and culture of this country. Within this course we look at indigenous history and culture, Australia’s natural disasters, slang words, the best tourism locations, politics, Aussie innovations, unique flora and fauna, natural resources and many other hot topics. Students will get to go on numerous excursions including a tour of Parliament House, the Harry Potter library, a rural school, a coastal town and other specialised locations.
You will take part in unique activities like bush tucker cooking/tasting, an Australian Rules Football clinic, reef and beach walking, Aboriginal art workshops, touching and feeding kangaroos and koalas and shopping at the Central Market. You will also hear from guest speakers with experience in elite sport, Aboriginal culture, our legal system, agriculture and many other areas.
EXPERIENCE THE AUSTRALIAN LIFESTYLE
Â鶹ÊÓƵ Cove School is 15 minutes north of the main city surfing beaches of Moana and South Port. Students from Brazil, Germany, Japan, Mexico and many other countries have learnt to surf at these beaches. The International Program students can have lessons during school time with all equipment and classes needed to move from a beginner level to a competent surfer. The teachers are qualified instructors and surfers who explain the types of waves, how to put on a wet suit, surfing positions as well as personal safety in the water. Please note, the school covers the cost of the bus to and from lessons but does not pay for the lessons themselves.
ÌýDEVELOP YOUR SKILLS
ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)
In English as a Second Language, students learn how to listen, explain and evaluate text structures and language features across a range of texts. Students justify their own interpretations of texts; applying skills in analysis and evaluating texts using evidence. Students create a wide range of texts to articulate meaningful ideas. They engage with others to solve problems, justify opinions and develop and expand arguments, while supporting their experiences, values and beliefs. They demonstrate understanding of grammar, vary vocabulary choices for impact, and accurately use spelling and punctuation when creating and editing texts. There is a strong emphasis on the function and expression of language.
